Sobre mim/About

Cresci a pedir-lhe que me ensinasse a costurar e a fazer crochet.

O tricot fascinava-me e eu pedi tanta vez à minha mãe para me ensinar.

 *****

Hello,
My name is Natércia, but my friends call me Naná, for short.

In my family, particularly on my mother's side, my grandmother embroidered exquisitelly and my mother crocheted and used to sew lots of clothes for me. My aunt (my dad's older sister) creates astoundingly beautiful crocheted pieces!

I grew up seeing my mother making clothes from scratch, mend shirt's colars and cuffs, pant's and skirt's waistbands and hemming trousers. And all that time there was always the sound of an old Singer threadle sewing machine in the background.

I used to love hovering over my mother everytime she sewed. I grew up asking her to teach me how to sew and crochet.

Vera, my mother, to whom I decided to dedicate this blog, finally acepted to teach me the basics of sewing, but she started at the very basic thecniques, so she began by teaching me how to hand sew, how to make a backstitch, an invisible stitch, how to hem a piece. She taught me how to thread the sewing machine and how to begin making my firts sewed samples with fabric. I remember getting bored while making straight seams one after the other, and they always turned out crooked...

When I was 8 years old, she taught me the basic crochet stitches and I even got around to making a little carrycot, a piece very much used in the Algarve region to serve fig or almond traditional cookies.

I was fascinated by knitting, so I asked my mother so many times to teach me. She did try, so many times... unsucessfully!
Because I was such an impatient and willful little girl, as opposed to my mother's very patient, calm and smooth temperament, I ended up loosing interest, because to me learning had to be quick, like snaping your fingers quick.

Oh... how I regret it now... When I got interested again by things handmade, Life had already taken my mother away...

Around the age of 32 anos, after being a mother, I decided to recover the old Singer threadle sewing machine (manufactured in 1903) and I brought it home from my parent's house. With the help of my husband, she was pristine and ready to sew again, as always.

I think the sewing bug got to me, and so I began to be interested not only in sewing clothes, but also patchwork.

After attending a wool felting workshop, I bought a skein of cotton thread, usually used in crochet, and out of pure curiosity I tryed to see if I could still crochet. I was happily pleased to discover that I still knew how to crochet, and that I could still use that barbed hook, just as when I was 8/9 years old. By this time, I began to use Youtube as a resource to learn all those stitches that I hadn't learned before.

A year later, I had the opportunity to learn how to embroider by hand, how to ajour and how to knit, by having private classes with D. Amália, the mother of a good friend of mine.

Nowadays, I crochet and knit in a daily basis, I embroider occasionally and sew a lot less than I desired. I feel most confortable at crochet and while I am swaying the hook I feel happy, focused and I somehow put my most loud thoughts in order, and find some peace of mind.

In September 2015 I decided to tape my very first podcast in portuguese, about crochet, knitting, sewing and other crafts I might be interested in.

I no longer can imagine my life without my crafts, because they became part of me and of who I am.
